Pikes v Spalding video by Old Git

Posted: 7/4/2019 at 20:09:42, 406 views.

Not seen Spalding United since the Boro’s old Midland League days of the mid-60s
so I took myself over to Pickering on Saturday to see if the Pikes were any closer escaping relegation.
Not many goals and even less when I found out that I hadn’t got Spalding’s goal.
Anyways here’s a bit of the action and as usual Blotty had a big say in the result.

just before Christmas so I couldn’t play footy in the Minor League.
Couldn’t walk too well until the start of Cricket season
so got to all those post-Christmas games & plenty of goals about.
Just checked the league table and Spalding finished half way
so they weren’t the worst team.
They saved that for the next season when they finished bottom.

It was an even game by Old Git

Posted: 8/4/2019 at 12:50:44, 415 views. In reply to 'RE: Pikes v Spalding video'

but in the closing 15 mins Pikes were really on the attack,
which pretty much reflects their home form this season, leaving it late to catch up.
Might have been different if Blotty had stuck away the early penalty.
When teams are down at the bottom all the games are pretty much
the same and you understand why they are down there.
Silly defensive errors, giving the ball away under no pressure
and the ability to miss the easiest of chances.
The better teams overall take their chances & don’t make mistakes every game.
Watching Ian’s highlights from Pikes this season, even in just 12 mins
a game, you can see what the problems have been.

I went to Sheffield Wednesday v Aston Villa yesterday and who should sit behind me in a crowd of 30,000 - Rudy Funk. Had a good chat about his time at Scarborough. He was a hugely popular manager and an important part of our history/development at the right time. He totally loved his time at Boro which is still close to his heart.

There I was sat at the computer working and listening to Ant & Will with their excellent commentary. I maybe went to make a cuppa once & also at one point the broadcast seemed to go a bit strange but I heard the rest. Well I thought I did. Couldn’t believe it, out of 6 goals I only heard Watson’s & then their penalty - I somehow missed 4 goals. Wouldn’t have thought it possible. LOL. Steady away for JD, I’m sure he has been given a lot to think about.

Whenever I’ve listened, the commentary itself has been spot on, but too often the commentary has cut out at random intervals due to “technical problems" and it suddenly cuts to a rolling and repeating news bulletin.

Unfortunately the commentary comes from a tablet that works on 4G/3G. At some grounds it can be connected to WiFi but very few.
Mobile data is what it is unfortunately and that’s the kit that gets provided by YCR - be nice if they invested in some upgrades given how well the Extra channels now do.

different line up from previous game, thought we were lucky not to go in at half time 3-1 down , we played some decent football and kept it on the floor midfield and forwards linked up well, deacey as got some work on to sort the defence ,at times they were woeful, at least (lazy) wally scored two cracking goals and takes him higher in top scorer table. hope I get another 8/10.

Yes, Tommy kept us in the game in the first half with two excellent saves (and he came fairly close to saving the penalty in the second half too, dived the right way but just could quite get it). Another very good display from him.

Wally’s goals (his 26th & 27th of the season) were both top draw. The first a powerful header into the top corner and the second a thunderous strike with his left foot that gave the keeper no chance. If I’m not mistaken, his next goal will be his 50th competitive goal for Boro. I think he’s only made about 75-80 appearances for us so that’s a superb goals to appearances rate.

Overall an entertaining game and a very good result because Bamber Bridge are a better side than their league position would suggest (surely too good to be relegated?). Having their manager poached by FCUM mid-season seems to have knocked them and put them on a downward spiral. But they created plenty of chances in the first half and opened up our defence almost with ease. Maybe our defence simply lack the cohesion and confidence that comes with having the same line-up week after week - because that part of the team has been a like revolving door in terms of selection.

No question that we remain vulnerable defensively, but many positives today:

Reasonable return performance from Johnson
Much improved performance from Brooksby
Hardly any aimless high balls
Great counterattacking play
4 good goals
3 points from an away game

What rumours? Am intrigued.

There’s usually quite a big turnover of players at this level - remember how much the team changed from the last squad at Brid and the first at the new ground. Even more would surely be expected with a new manager coming in. This squad has had terrible form in the last few months anyway

Rumour? You don’t need a rumour to figure out that Walshaw is sadly likely to follow Kittrick out of the club (didn’t they car share?), and Tommy Taylor is likely to move on to better things next year.

Near the end of last season I was chatting with Walshaw’s grandad and he mentioned that this season may be his last but would see how he felt after this season. Wally must feel he still has a lot to offer to the club and with his old manager joining Boro he can do a job for him next season. His record stands for himself and i’m sure the manager would welcome Wally back next season.

Wally is top scorer in the league and definitely not been firing on all cylinders, far from it, yet somehow still top of the charts? Yes he’s getting on a bit, yes he’s lazy but he’ll get 20 goals next season without a doubt. decent winger (Hi Max if you’re reading this !) brought in and he’ll knock on 30 goals. Hope he stays.

“Can’t see why with season nearly over, we get a new manager"

Right, for starters let’s turn this observation on it’s head and instead ask Geoff when is the best time of the season to get a new manager?

I actually think this is the perfect time to bring a new manager in:

1) The season was fizzling out (bar the NRSC cup final), and crowds were dwindling. That drop in income can be weighed against whatever the cost is/was of terminating SK’s contract early.

2) Whatever JD’s comments about still fighting for the play-offs, the season - in terms of promotion hopes - is all but over. Yes, we *could* scrape into the play-offs, and then maybe, just maybe we could win promotion. But, it’s a very long shot. I’ll be over the moon if we do achieve it, and I’ll eat my newly acquired Lower Breck hat if we do (but I’ll need gravy). We’re in no danger of relegation, so you could argue it’s a no risk decision to change the manager right now.

3) JD was signed after the transfer deadline. This locks him into the current squad. It prevents him from diving in with new signings, and potentially ballooning the playing budget at the end of this season (I’m not implying that he would have, but the temptation to do so has been taken away)

4) Further to point 3), this forces JD to take time to assess the current squad over the final games. He knows who is and isn’t on contract, when those contracts are up, who has contract options, and who can be released at the end of the season.

5) Further to point 4), the board now has a chance to assess how good JD is at turning round a struggling squad. We get to see how good he is as a coach, a leader, and a motivator. A lot of managers like to make an impact by bringing in new players as a quick fix. JD hasn’t got that option. See point 3) above.

I know nothing about him other than what I’ve read and seen in the last hour, but preliminary thoughts are that he fits the profile of someone who can take us forward. Encouraging to hear talk of attractive style of play and developing young players.

Interestingly, his usual choice of assistant is Mark Hume, according to this link he took the BPA job on the proviso that Hume would be allowed to join him

U19’s - next step? by Dewsbury User: Dewsbury

Posted: 1/4/2019 at 15:11:59, 218 views.

Where next for the U19 team? The Northern U19 Alliance Football League was the obvious one to start out in, but should Denny & Ryan be looking to get the squad in front of stronger opposition? The league itself is quite small, with only 7 teams (or maybe 6 now - I’m not sure what’s happened with the Liversedge side), and therefore there is a limited number of fixtures. If they want more games in the season, is the National League U19 Alliance an option for us? Current teams in Division I include:

Guiseley AFC U19 Academy
York City FC U19
Gateshead FC U19s
South Shields U19s
FC Halifax Town U19
Carlisle United
Eccleshill United
Harrogate Town FC U19 (College)
Darlington FC U19s
Frickley Athletic FC U19
Farsley Celtic FC U19

Thoughts?

Seems a good idea in theory. From a financial POV Carlisle is a slight downer. Any idea how Eccleshill manage Simon? I wouldn’t have thought they were a natural mix given the size and potential of some of the other clubs involved.

No idea about Eccleshill, sorry. Just spotted that City of Liverpool have a team in Division J, so there does appear to be a mix of teams from different steps in there.

EvoStik Division One by Dewsbury User: Dewsbury

Posted: 1/4/2019 at 10:58:42, 316 views.

I’m reading that the EvoStik Division One is no longer going to be split East/West next season, and will instead become Div One North West, and Div One South East. Apparently the clubs have all been informed already, but I’ve not been able to find any announcement from the league. Doesn’t affect us directly, but always interesting to know what’s going on around us!

How about this projected line up for D1NW (nicked from the Non League Matters forum projections spreadsheet)? I guess travel time for Dunston in that league would be no worse than Morpeth have had in D1E this year travelling to the likes of Spalding, Stamford and Wisbech.

Brighouse Town
City of Liverpool
Clitheroe
Colne
Droylsden
Dunston U.T.S.
Glossop North End
Kendal Town
Marske United
Mossley
Ossett United
Pickering Town
Pontefract Collieries
Prescot Cables
Ramsbottom United
Runcorn Linnets
Tadcaster Albion
Trafford
Widnes
Workington

Well, it’s not in the south east either is it? Maybe if you say Div 1 North AND West it makes more sense? Along with Div 1 South AND East.

As ever, you have to draw the line somewhere to split the clubs into two groups. We’ve had horizontal and vertical. Now’s the time for a diagonal dividing line!

To be honest, it seems quite a sensible idea to me.

What we really need is probably three smaller leagues in the north at that level, and not two. North, East, and West.

North could be made up of anyone north of the M62, and Manchester/Liverpool teams:

Brighouse
City of Liverpool
Clitheroe
Colne
Droylsden
Dunston
Kendal
Marske
Mossley
Ossett United
Pickering
Prescot
Ramsbottom
Tadcaster
Trafford
Widnes
Workington

East could then be teams such as:

Mansfield
Belper
Cleethorpes
Frickley
Ilkeston
Lincoln
Loughborough
Mickleover
Sheffield
Stamford
Spalding
Stocksbridge
Wisbech
Worksop

And the West could be:

Glossop
Runcorn
Chasetown
Kidsgrove
Leek
Market Drayton
Newcastle
Sutton Coldfield

We’d be left a few teams short, but then some of the teams from the Midlands could switch into the West/East divisions I’m sure.

There is another Step 4 league coming (I think) in the next couple of years. I believe the Northern League have applied to run it, so chuck that into the mix…….no idea if the current EvoStik D1 rejig is being done with that in mind or not.

On the basis of having experienced both formats of Division 1, which would you prefer; the current one or reverting back to North/South and if so which league?

Mmm, confused! Looking at the way it`s worded Dewsbury, is that not what we had previously? Do you think it will mean that the leagues will be taking in clubs from further South like before?
