Taddy / Darlo by Warrior

Posted: 30/5/2019 at 20:20:31, 257 views.

Remember when some saw Taddy as the shining example, what we should aspire to be like to achieve going forward.
No players, no manager, owners company gone bust, the fantastic media man has left. They seem in a real hole. Another lesson to us how very quickly things can go wrong.
Live within our means whatever that brings as a fans owned club is the safest and best way to run a club of our stature. Any club in fact in my opinion.
Another thing. Darlo have raised for the second year running £80k to put towards the playing budget. Huge effort. Allows the board to set a safe budget and the fans top it up. Great idea, maybe in future we can raise even £5/£10k to top up the budget. Admittedly raising the stand money this last year hasn’t been successful and can only think means a lower budget for this season. A few Boro fans and people in town still do not seem to realise we are a fans run club and money is needed to be raised to both run the club and help set a budget. We can be as good as we want they way we run it. We work hard and raise £1000 or £100,000 it goes into running our club better and easier. The board and club and then the manager can only work with what they have got.
Back to the stand money we need to raise. All gone quiet as to where we are with it. Martin Dowey fab day aside not much info on events or things to be done to raise more cash. Perhaps more a supporters club job rather than day to day board job. Is it time for either a fundraising committee or a board member solely there to arrange fundraising/events. For the stand, for the club and for the budget constantly going forward.

…..for all of your hard work, great coverage and support for the Boro over the years.

We’ll be very, very fortunate if your successor is able to provide the quality and quantity of content you have consistently provided.

You’ve always struck the right balance between; being supportive without being a sycophantic club shill, necessarily critical without resorting to knee-jerk hysteria, and close enough to individuals to get insightful comment whilst remaining detached enough to maintain a reasoned viewpoint.

Look forward to seeing you in with the rabble on the terraces next season rather than sat shivering in the press boxes.

Good luck and thank you.

Not everyone can be this silly but it is nice to see so many trying.

A top quality player well thought of in the conference so I doubt it but I would go BIG for him as he would protect the back four better than anyone did last season. He did love his loan period and if we were flexible on training I would be optimistic .

Changeover of playing staff by Burniston User: Burniston

Posted: 22/5/2019 at 23:28:55, 230 views.

I’ve had a bit of a think about this recently. How many people actually thought we were good enough to be promoted last season? Even when we were top I had my concerns about how we would compete in the league above. Don’t get me wrong I thought the squad did really well considering we were in the league below, the previous season. Overall I will count last season as a success and massively thank all the players for their part. We all tend to get attached to players and I am no exception but for the club to grow it is almost inevitable that some players will become victims of their, and the club’s, success as we move up the leagues (hopefully and in good time). JD has a proven record at this level of getting promotions & we should all give him our full backing because he obviously knows what standard of player we need to win this league which I feel is quite tough. Points wise we were well below the top two and so a major rethink would be required to bridge that gap. Boro has had one heck of a journey since NCEL div 1 and the players we started with - we should see it as progressive evolution and I for one thank greatly all those who contributed not just last year but for the past 12 years to get us to where we are now. Really looking forward to next season.

I agree totally with your post Burniston. However, with regard to changeover of players, I was disappointed at a couple of departures and also a bit surprised that, considering throughout the season, supporters on all platforms have commented on our defensive frailties, errors and even culpabilities for losses on some occasions, that basically, with the exception of Killock and Williamson, they all remain.

Defensive frailties …. by Cynic Al

Posted: 23/5/2019 at 15:12:22, 182 views. In reply to 'Re: changeover of playing staff'

You said that ‘they all remain’ except two.

I cannot remember, and you may be able to correct me, a statement saying that Gooda and/or Burgess are intending to play for us next year. Neither were in the ‘contracted’ list that included Coulo, Tommy, Johnson, Brooksbythat was released earlier (as far as I remember).

I guess that those players who have already left were a ‘not required’ and the remaining players (I think you could include Watson and McNaughton here) might still be talking to/negotiating with us and/or other clubs.

I can’t remember a statement confirming Merris’ status next season. Is he a coach, player/coach or player ?

I believe that JD has had small(ish) squads when he has managed at this level before. I think the stat I was quoted was that when he won the league at Farsley he had a squad of 18 at the beginning of the season. Of the 18, 15 were still with the club at the end of that season. Maybe he got lucky, or maybe that’s his MO. He does seem to be making decisions about the squad rather than letting it ‘drift on’ and players get frustrated and leave.

Perhaps it was my misinterpretation of the 7 on the released list - I assumed that the list was finite in terms of who JD didn’t want. I accept that some others may leave of their own volition because they’ve had better offers elsewhere, but my assumption was that the 7 had been released to make way for the new players to join those who had not been place on the released list to make up the squad for next season.

We’ve signed eight new players thus far, four of whom are defenders (plus a utility player) - surely that’s a sign that the manager thinks it’s an area that needed strengthening?

Whilst not particularly agreeing with some of your posts Geoff I don’t recall ridiculing them myself. If I had a motto it would be to keep a positive mental attitude and that is why I don’t like players being personally shot down on here even though I might agree with some of the sentiments posted on here at times - I try to keep them to myself and that includes pitch-side. We really should have finished at least 7th but for an inexplicable TT venture at South Shields so 12th was a bit doom and gloom really and we were much better than that. As our final position proved, you were correct by saying the team wasn’t good enough but it is best to grow slowly and steadily and don’t forget, the team was good enough to get us to the highest ever league position in the club’s history and win a cup final that we have never won before.

New players ! by Stepney Seadog 1

Posted: 21/5/2019 at 21:57:07, 302 views.

Contrary to some of the threads questioning the new arrivals, I believe that our manager has chosen his pick of the Tadcaster side . He has only been with us for the end of season games yet he has assessed what type of player he wants and what he expects of them. Clearly he feels that strength and pace are his priorities and on checking the Wiki. ratings , it would appear that most have played at a higher level. In the majority they have played together at Tadcaster, who łwere a better side than their table position showed. I am pretty certain that Taddy would have wished to retain most. After over seven decades of supporting Boro I still get a buzz waiting for the new season. A new manager, new stand, and a new team. Up the Boro. !

I think John Deacey has done the right thing.

Not that the players he is ‘letting go’ are bad players. They have all been part of our journey. There is no way that he could have kept all the new signings and last year’s squad happy.

One of the SK criticisms from last year was about the way he treated Sam Hewitt and the fact that Sam felt he was not really given a chance. By being ‘up front’ and making decisions that criticism cannot be levied in the same way.

Also, we do not actually know what has happened here …. it could be any of the three options below or a multitude of other options….
a) he has rung/met them and said, you are not in my plans
b) he has rung/met them offered them an opportunity to be in the squad (maybe not the first XI) and they have declined
c) he has rung/met them with a deal on less money or money that does not meet their own valuation of themselves, so they have declined

I think the fundamental thing I am saying is that when we consider who we would like to keep we have no idea about their financial expectations and the budget that JD is working within (same as, more than, or less than SK ?), we also have no idea about player X who is available at the same or less money.

All about opinions of course but release of Cadman (especially if we are committed to playing better football) seems like a potential blunder to me. Wouldn’t be surprised if this doesn’t come back to bite us at some point - thanks to the others, Vallo especially for commitment to the cause.

Let’s hope these new players brought in from lower league’s to replace all the departing step up, make the grade and are an improvement. I’m not so sure they will but having not seen them play cant really comment.
I’m slightly concerned about next season in all honesty, too many imports from a team who didn’t do fantastic things in the division below us and this league is a big step up. The pre season friendlies will be watched with great interest!

Why dont managers rate Cadman ? by deep seadog User: deep seadog

Posted: 21/5/2019 at 12:31:38, 174 views. In reply to 'RE: 3 Boro players depart for pastures new'

Like a lot of others I was a big fan and I think when he started his record of assists was outstanding, but none of our previous managers have really trusted him and he has always struggled to get starts. there must be factors we are not aware of ? and yes it does seem strange that so many players from a team that underperformed massively last year in a league below is puzzling but we can only put faith in the manager and back his judgement.

Cadman & Valentine really rated those two and think we will by Old Git

miss them. Cadman for his skill & Vallo for his effort, determination & bite.
Good luck in the future and hope they both get a good team.
Can see us coming up against them soon and suffering for it.
The other main worry has been highlighted already.
We’re signing players from below rather than above.
I watched a few games at Pickering and never spotted one player who would improve us.
Also saw several games at Whitby, in our league, and never thought, ‘oh, he’d be good in our side.

Fully agree about those two but I think we have to trust JD that he knows what he is doing. Some of the guys we have signed from Taddy were chosen to form the ‘team of the division’ so despite the team of Taddy not quite doing it, these lads should shine and be hungry. I don’t always think it is necessarily a good thing to get players from the division above. They could have been let go because they are no longer up to it anymore and the hunger will not be the same. To get a ‘good un’ would have to have special circumstances to draw them here - like Coulo who lives here. Looking like a brand new team again to get to know - should be interesting.

Also I don’t think Tadcaster underperformed massively. If anything it was the highest position they had finished in their history.

“I don’t always think it is necessarily a good thing to get players from the division above."

Very true, it’s certainly no guarantee of higher quality is it.

For example, I went to the National League North play-off final between Chorley and Spennymoor the other day and I can honestly say it was no different to watching a game in our division. In fact there was no player on either side who showed anything like the quality of a Walshaw or a Coulson. We are lucky to have them.

If I was Boro manager watching that game with a view to making some signings then only Chorley’s Meppen-Walter stood out from the crowd of mediocrity on display. The playing surface was superb - like a bowling green - but neither side could maintain possession. Maybe it was big game nerves, but I came away thinking “blimey, these are two of the top teams in this division, we’ve nothing to fear if we go up".

Re: Why don’t managers rate Cadman? by Tommy Wooton

I think that they do rate him but I believe he is just the easiest one to drop. This is because he is the player who is furthest away from the others in terms of his personal playing style. He’s not a blustering, blood and thunder sort of player - his play is much more measured that can be misconstrued as lack of commitment, which, in reality could not be further from the truth.
Also, although managers talk about wanting their teams to play football, getting them to do it is a different thing. ( Numerous times over the season we’ve complained about the up and under football served up.) There’s no point having a technical player on the pitch when the ball is aimlessly punted up long and high and that misses out the midfield anyway.

I agree about Cadman, he was our most creative midfielder , with fast feet, by a long way

But SK and now JD were reluctant to give him a starting role. With a player like him you either build your team round him or don’t play him - both managers appear to have taken the view that they would play safe and pack the mid-field with graft rather than gumption , and a number of folks have commented on how that worked out

JD has made some big decisions and we need to give the new players and manager a fair crack of the whip - only time will tell about how well these decisions will turn out

Thank you to Tommy Taylor & Morgs by Farsley Arkan User: Farsley Arkan

A genuine thanks to those fellas & the others I may not have seen yet, who have tweeted/posted complaining about the frankly dreadful decimation of our history that is being perpetrated at Throstle Nest In the last 24 hrs.

Dunno if you folks are aware or have noticed, but we have a new chairman - who has completely replaced our badge (NO) AND is trying to change our ground’s name (NOOO!!) AND completely change our kit/colours…NNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!!

I APPRECIATE it will not be top of your list of priorities at SAFC but I just wanted to express that we supporters are grateful for the solidarity shown by former Blue Army players.
BTW it all looks hideous - mint green n black badge & kit(?????) with a kind of ghost helmet badge, that looks to have been cut n pasted by a 10 yr old. Think Minnesota high school grid iron team & you’ll get the idea even before taking a look, if any of you do so.

No one in any seriousness likes it, and it’s the sort of thing that can make a fella turn and walk away from his club… as it won’t really be HIS club anymore, being like this. Imagine waking up tomorrow to a yellow & blue kit + a walrus for a badge…

Ollie Banks, by Stepney Seadog 1

Scored a brilliant goal for Tranmere in the first play off. I am sure he played for Boro. against Bridlington and scored both goals. He was obviously a good player and left the club shortly after. He moved to N. Ferriby then FCUM before joining Chesterfield and is now a regular for Tranmere.

He did play for Boro for about half a season or thereabouts. Brought in by Rudy. I had the honour of him, his sister and Mum Dad stay with me at Harmony Country Lodge guesthouse - nice family.

New gaffer, new team and the seven signings so far are really promising but obviously some of the last seasons squad will have to go to make room for them. I am interested to see if he wants to keep any of the non-contracted players and I wonder if they know who they are yet?

I suppose geography and demographics means that our recruiting grounds for non-local players will inevitably be mostly along the A64 corridor and Hull.
