good point is that.

If we do get there, are the play-offs the usual format with one going up?

Yes, so assuming we reach the play-offs we’ll be away in a one legged play-off (unless we can push on and finish 2nd or 3rd).

Not quite the same format, as there are now 4 leagues at Step 3. There are still 3 teams relegated from each of Conf North & South. Champions of each Step 3 league will go up, leaving only 2 more promotion spots. These will be decided by inter-league “super play-off" matches.

No. Play-off semi and final then a ‘super’ play-off decider against one of the three play-off winners from the other leagues at this level.
Conference North and South only relegate three teams each so only two of the four play-off winners will get promoted this season, alongside the four champions.

I’d forgotten about that. It all means the play-off route is going to be an even bigger challenge than usual for any side finishing 4th or 5th because you’d probably need to win 3 consecutive away ties.

Just to show the potential task ahead, if you froze the leagues now and pretended it was the final table then we’d face an away tie at Warrington, then an away tie at winners of South Shields/ Nantwich then, assuming we kept winning, probably another away “Super-play-off” tie against the winners of another league. That’s a big ask.

Not wanting to wish it on anybody, but what do we expect would happen if a team from the level above were to fold or voluntarily resign from the league? What is the precedent - additional promotion spaces or reprieves from relegation?

My favourite Gordon Banks save by Old Git

Posted: 12/2/2019 at 12:55:38, 130 views. In reply to 'Not forgetting that Colin Appleton was'

was one I’ve never seen.
It was on December 15, 1971 and was the League Cup Semi-final 2nd leg
between West Ham & Stoke City.

West Ham had won the first leg 2-1 at Stoke and Stoke were leading 1-0 at West Ham
when the Hammers were awarded a penalty.
I was working an evening shift at Reuters on Fleet Street and I was watching the
Teleprinter for the lastest prices of stocks and shares coming in from around the world
as part of my job working on the American Markets Desk.

All my ‘Desk’ colleagues were West Ham suppporters and they were gathered around
the next Teleprinter, the one that brought in the UK Sports News.
They all cheered so I had a look at the message on their Teleprinter it read
‘Penalty awarded to West Ham’
A few seconds and the Teleprinter burst into life ‘Geoff Hurst takes Penalty’
It was now tense in the office until once again the Teleprinter started up and the message was
‘Banks saves penalty’.
I really enjoyed that as it went all quiet and I shouted ‘Banksy Banksy’.
It was good revenge for me as I’d been in work on 20th November 1971
when Hartlepool hammered Boro 6-1 in the F.A. Cup and my ‘colleagues’ had a good laugh at that.

That save meant that the teams were tied after 2 legs and it took 2 replays before Stoke won through
to the final by beating West ham 3-2 in a game that saw Bobby Moore take over in
the West Ham goal for 20 mins.
The Hammers goalkeeper Bobby Ferguson was receiving treatment so Bobby Moore went between the sticks.
Moore saved a penalty but the taker, Mike Bernard, followed up and scored from the rebound.

About the Banks save that I never saw
From the Daily Mail
“Gordon Banks last night made one of the greatest saves of his distinguished career,
at Upton Park, to stop West Ham from going into the League Cup final at Wembley on March 4″.
Stoke went on to beat Chelsea 2-1 in that final.

Yes he played against Monza in the Anglo Italian competition in May 1976 in a guest appearance. Kept a clean sheet as well in a goalless draw. I’m sure he helped swell the crowd to over 3000.

I’ve been watching football now for over 65 years and in that time the best goalkeeping display I ever saw involved Gordon Banks

I say “involved” as he was only half of that display

The match in question was Wednesday v Leicester at Hillsborough in Dec 1965 - keeping goal for Wednesday was the England international the great Ron Springett, whose younger brother Peter is an ex-Boro keeper. In 1966 Banks and Springett were the 2 goalies in the World Cup Winning squad

The match ended 0-0 but it was the most entertaining 0-0 I have ever seen, it should have been about 5-5. I’ve never seen a game before or since where both keepers had an absolute blinder ,both sets of forwards must have come off feeling totally cheated. It was an end to end match and it seemed as though when. Banks made a brilliant save next time the ball was at the Wednesday end Springett thought “ just watch this then” and made an equally great save - and so it went on vice versa for 90 minutes

Thanks for the memory Gordon….and Ron

another link to scarbororough was the York Stoke fa cup game in early 1969, at the time stoke were still the buyers of old internationals that were let go towards the end of their careers like George Eastham, David Herd and Peter Dobing but somehow also snaffled Gordon Banks. The whole team stayed at the Grand Hotel for a week, trained on the beach and kept many school kids entertained for half the school holidays. The whole team were absolute entertainers, couldn’t find enough time for the kids with mountains of autographs and chats but easily the most approachable and helpful and an absolute gentleman was Gordon Banks.

What chance a premier league squad training on a snow covered beach?

U19s 8 Pontefract 0 by Old Git

Posted: 11/2/2019 at 22:56:13, 98 views.

Not the close game I was expecting and it didn’t help Pontefract
that they gifted us the first 3 goals in first quarter of an hour.
A defender and keeper buggered about and lost the ball to Aiden Thurston
who placed it into the net from the edge of the box after 60 seconds.
In the 2nd minute we tried to repay the compliment and nearly gifted
the visitors a goal with a similar pratting about before sending the ball down to the
swimming pool end for a repeat of the first goal fiasco but this time it was Harry Bissett
who was gifted the ball and raced through to just inside the box before hitting home to make it 2-0.
On fifteen minutes the visitor’s keeper played the ball out to a defender just outside
the right hand side of the box and the defender with no one near him played it out for a Boro corner.
The ball came in from the corner, a Boro head got to it first the ball hit a defender and dropped
then after a slow motion ricochet in the 6 yard box the ball reached Flynn McNaughton
who slammed it home for 3-0. Easy game this football lark when the opposition is playing for you.
Fro the next 15 mins the game ebbed and flowed but Pontefract couldn’t get a shot on target
and then Boro played the ball through the middle and Harry Bissett.
banged it home from 10 for 4-0 to Boro
Second half got under way and there was a few mins huffing & puffing and then Boro sub
George Walmsley got into his stride, going on a mazy dribbling run through 3 tackles
he got to the edge of the box and crashed a shot past the keeper into the right hand corner for 5-0.

A few minutes later he went on a similar run and this time cracked it into the other corner,
giving the keeper no chance so it was 6-0. a few minutes later the ball hit the post but from another
shot but no hat-trick for George.
This seemed to waken up Pontefract who’d made a mass substitution of 5 in an
attempt to get back in the game and the Boro keeper seemed to take Pontefract on by himself
as the Boro defence went on a holiday in their heads as Craig Thordason made a trio
of excellent saves to ensure the Boro defence wasn’t’ breached.

With the night turning chilly in the stand and the game fast approaching closing time
George Walmsley finally got his hat-trick running in from the left to the edge of the box
and hitting the ball across the keeper into the corner.
Was that the end of the scoring, no, almost with the last kick of the game Fergus McGauthrie cracked
in a fine goal to make it 8-0.

It sounds as though Boro had it all their own way but Pontefract had a couple of good lads up front
who created some decent opportunities but they and their team mates just couldn’t finish them off
and really spurned two or three great chances to score in the 2nd half.
Looked a bigger crowd than last week and Pontefract brought a few fans with them but it
was Boro fans who were celebrating with a good round of applause as the teams came off at the end.

I just wanted to congratulate the third official from Saturday’s game. Like a majority of the people watching, the decision of the linesman to give our penalty did seem a strange one at the time. However having now watched the slow-mo of the incident, you can clearly see their No. 5 deliberately stick out his leg and trip Coulo. Well done liner, whoever you are, a very brave and correct decision.
