Just reading the list of agreed signings on the official site, no mention of Coulo or Walshaw, is that just an oversight because they are on contracts?

Players that have recently committed to play for us next year.

Walshaw and Coulson both already have contracts that committed them to us for 2018/19.

So, not really an oversight IMO. But, if you meant, can you add them to that list as players committed to play for SAFC in 2018/19 then, yes, you can.

I did wonder if it was Bailey. I would call this a great signing. ‘Dream signing’ a bit overboard though. Don’t get me wrong I’m thrilled Bailey is signing for us although it now seems a bit harsh that he was excluded from the cup final at Middlesbro.

When I said ‘harsh’ I probably meant ‘tough’ on him. He’d played most of the previous rounds to get us into the final & helped get the team promotion. Harrogate then took him back but then said they didn’t want him. I suppose it is what it is - no blame meant for anybody.

To my mind he is a dream signing because if he stays fit his is something else - that saving tackle against Brighouse is arguably the best goal saving tackle I have EVER seen from a Boro player. You’d have put your house on the ball going in the net!

O/T Wembley - should finals be elsewhere? by Malton Seadog User: Malton Seadog

Posted: 27/5/2018 at 19:56:32, 250 views.

Interested in thoughts on Wembley and whether certain big games should be played elsewhere?

A crowd of less than 27,000 at the League One playoff final between Rotherham and Shrewsbury today means over two thirds of the stadium was empty. Non-league day attracted 31,403 split among the four finalists of the FA Trophy and Vase, leaving almost 60,000 empty seats. The Conference playoff final had 16,306 in the ground, leaving a whopping 73,000+ seats empty. The Checkatrade Trophy final between Lincoln City and Shrewsbury attracted 41,000, so still less than half full. Even the Chelsea-Southampton FA Cup semi final only had 73,416 in the ground, leaving well over 15,000 empty seats.

Only the FA Cup final (87,647), one FA Cup semi final (84,667), the League Cup final (85,671), and Championship playoff final (85,243) really justified the size of the stadium this season.

Coventry v Exeter tomorrow in League Two promises to be better than today, with Coventry having sold 35,000 and Exeter around 10,000, but the crowd will still probably not exceed 50,000.

As a bit of off-season discussion, do you think certain games should be moved away from Wembley?

Theoretical situation next season in League One for example: Doncaster Rovers vs Barnsley in the playoff final at Wembley? Wouldn’t Old Trafford be a better option, or even Hillsborough which can hold almost 40,000?

I think the FA Trophy and FA Vase should stay at Wembley, simply because it’s magical for clubs like Thatcham Town and Stockton Town to get to play there.

The Conference Playoff final? Not convinced. I think moving it back to a Premier League or Championship ground would suffice. Tranmere, the best supported club in the division, had around 10,000 at Wembley. Can’t help but think if it was at Old Trafford or the Etihad, that this number would be doubled.

FA Cup Semi Finals? Not for me. You’re being rewarded for potentially finishing 4th in the competition.

Thoughts? What should and shouldn’t be played at the national stadium with its 90,000 capacity?

As relevant might be the price of tickets, I know that some averagish seats at today’s game were about £80. Add travelling costs and the usual extras and it’s just too expensive for many (esp if can be watched in a local pub for nothing).

I agree with you with regards to the size of the attendances etc. But I was under the impression that the use of wembley had more to do with the FA needing to have as many events there as possible in order to finance the renovations. Holding a play-off final at another ground would cost the FA money. It’s never been about the fans ……

Manchester would be much better for clubs like Tranmere, but not for two southern clubs. It’s happened before like that

Whitby would’ve been a more realistic venue for our final v Middlesbrough if we’re talking crowd:capacity ratio, but I loved going to a big ground, it was a great trip out. Even including the SFC days it’s the biggest ground I’ve seen a boro team play at, and it made it special. If we got to play at Wembley in front of 5,000 I wouldn’t care that 85,000 seats were empty (or whatever the number is)

I can’t remember when we announce our first flurry of “signings" last pre-season, but seem to remember it was close to the kit launch (17th June) because I seem to remember a series of photos tweeted of players “signing", in the boardroom. These included the lesser-spotted Matt Dempsey and the never-spotted Aidan Savory, so believe nothing, until 1st July!

I agree that it’s annoying that other teams seem to be signing players this early, but SK won’t be signing players for the sake of it, he has always said he will only do it if they “improve the team".

Thanks. Yeh I seem to remember them being later last season. Plus we know that ’signing’ players this early actually means nothing until pre season and the season gets going (unless they are on contract I presume as some are e.g. Turnbull at shields).

Strange how early teams are announcing signings. Just hope we don’t miss out on players if they commit and keep their commitment to teams this early.

Regardless of whether we get gooda back (which I would love to), I would have Tyrone gay here at the drop of a hat. He’s pretty agricultural to say the least but every time I have seen him play against us he has dominated our front line. For what weaknesses he has he also has some real strengths. Be interesting to see our goal scoring record against teams with him in it!
Also… from seeing a few games of the evostik premier - not sure the quality is far different, and every team I have seen at that level have a massive centre back!

Not really a theory, just damn good business sense.

Pointless playing Brid, Pickering, Scarborough and District etc. on a Saturday away from home, while in (hopefully) sunny Scarborough, our ground is empty.

Speculating here of course, but I imagine we want “useful" competitive friendlies away midweek on grass, and any exhibition matches or crowd-pullers at home on Saturdays. It worked last season. Our first friendly at EY Carnegie attracted 271, while Sheff Utd attracted almost ten times that. Unusual circumstances given it was our first game back, but the point still holds.

Friendlies will always be about getting the team ready for the season (Pickering away, Harrogate away), maintaining good local relations (Scarborough XI), and playing charity/memorial matches (Brid Town). The missing link at the moment is crowd-pulling games against “glamour" sides, which is where the Saturdays at FLS will come into play.

Posted: 22/5/2018 at 15:58:30, 172 views.

I was eagerly awaiting an announcement about the PSFs only to find the first three are all away on an evening meaning no public transport to get back home.
And to think I purposefully planned my holiday to ensure I would be at home in July.

still 4 Saturdays to be filled though… by seadog365 User: seadog365

I’m sure there will be some cracking games on those days ;-)

Unless transport is “laid on" for the Brid or Pickering games I won’t be going.

Play the Tuesday/Thursday night games away, and have all the Saturdays at home. Saturday home games = £££.

Your prediction was (so far!) correct, but in theory every team would prefer to have their home friendlies on the Saturday, which obviously can’t happen.

Then again I guess Pickering can’t play home games on Saturdays in the summer which is why our friendlies there are always midweek.

Yes the original post was copied, in its entirety, from the Brid site, without any clarification of this admittedly.

Agreed that we will miss him.

My understanding is that it is a time and tiredness issue. I believe he will continue to commentate on YCR. Will does a lot of behind the scenes work on a voluntary basis. I can’t guess at the number of hours of his life that this takes up. Eventually the need for a rest, to recharge the batteries or maybe to focus on other areas of life, arises. It’s why the club needs volunteers both on match days and non match days to help the club run smoothly.

I am confident that some of the tasks that need doing could be done from anywhere in the country.

Nothing on either account. Know he said all this season’s squad will be invited back to pre season and hope we keep all of them. Not sure when inviting them all back will convert into them agreeing /signing on.

Wally and coulo on contract too. Of the others…. must keeps for me are: Taylor, Johnson, hewitt, Merris cadman, Dean, Valentine.
Some good other players who I would welcome back too.

Replacing max is going to be a massive task.

Reckon Bailey might come back as if Harrogate didn’t want him in conference north I doubt they will renew his contact for conference.

Would love to sign Tyrone gay. Not signed yet at Hyde…

Friendly predictions by Malton Seadog User: Malton Seadog

Posted: 21/5/2018 at 17:56:29, 182 views. In reply to 'RE: Pre season friendlies and signings'

Firstly, I think we’ll be try and have as many home friendlies on Saturdays as possible, against fairly attractive opposition.

For that reason, I predict Tuesday night away games vs Scarborough XI (confirmed), Bridlington (confirmed), Pickering, and maybe someone like Tadcaster.

At home, I wouldn’t be surprised if we had another U23 Football League game (Leeds, or one of the Sheffield clubs, or Hull), and then maybe some attractive first teams from higher leagues. Someone like Notts County, Grimsby (given our Max links), or - dare I say it - York City. That’d be an interesting game against a team now one(!) league above us. Not sure North Yorkshire Police would fancy that though, nor our club officials!

He played for us in SK’s first half season in early 2016. He signed at the same time as Niall Flint and from memory travelling was an issue as they came from a galaxy far far away, or at least Telford.
